Online MCQ format with 100 marks per subject. Minimum 60% required to pass each subject.
Total Subjects
1 Compulsory (S-01) + Choice of specialized subjects (S-02 to S-09) based on qualification.
Exam Fees
Registration: ā¹500 (one-time). Exam Fee: ā¹500 per subject + applicable service tax.
Exam Schedule
Conducted quarterly in March, June, September, and December every year.
About the Insurance Surveyor Exam
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has authorized the Insurance Institute of India (III) to conduct the Pre-licensing Test for Insurance Surveyors & Loss Assessors as required by IRDAI regulations.
Who Can Appear for This Exam?
Persons enrolled with the IRDAI as trainee surveyors who meet the following criteria:
- Have undergone the prescribed practical training
- Have submitted their quarterly training reports as per the norms to IRDAI
- Meet requirements as per IRDAI Circular Ref: IRDA/SUR/GDL/MISC/288/12/2020 dated 01.12.2021

Registration & Examination Process
Step-by-Step Registration Process
Step 1: IRDAI Enrollment
First, enroll as a trainee surveyor with IRDAI through the BAP Portal. Complete the required practical training and submit quarterly reports.
Step 2: Create III Account
Visit the Insurance Institute of India website and create your login credentials. Keep your login name, password, and email address secure.
Step 3: Map Enrollment Number
Link your IRDAI enrollment number with your III registration. Enter enrollment number and date received from IRDAI.
Step 4: Complete Profile & Upload Photo
Fill in all personal details, upload your photograph as per specifications, and verify all information.
Step 5: Paper Enrollment
Select subjects you want to appear for: S-01 (compulsory) plus specialized subjects based on your qualification.
Step 6: Make Payment
Pay the examination fees online. Registration fee: ā¹500 (one-time). Exam fee: ā¹500 per subject.
Step 7: Book Exam Slot
Once enrolled, book your exam slot during the available examination windows (March/June/September/December).
Step 8: Download Hall Ticket
Download your hall ticket before the exam date and appear for the online examination at the designated center.
Eligibility Criteria for Insurance Surveyor License
Academic Qualifications
To become an Insurance Surveyor and Loss Assessor, candidates must possess one of the following qualifications:
- Engineering: B.E., B.Tech, B.Sc. (Engineering), Diploma in Engineering, AMIE
- Naval/Marine: Naval Engineering, Naval Architecture, Shipping (Master’s degree)
- Agriculture: B.Sc. (Agriculture) or related agricultural qualifications
- Architecture: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture
- Professional Qualifications: CA (ICAI), ICWA (ICMAI), Company Secretary (ICSI)
- Law: LLB or equivalent law degree
- Insurance: Post-graduate diploma or degree in Insurance
Training Requirements
- Institutional Training: 2 months with National Insurance Academy (NIA) or Insurance Institute of India (III)
- Practical Training: Minimum 12 months under a licensed senior surveyor (for fresh candidates)
- Additional Departments: 8 weeks training for each additional specialization
- Training Reports: Submit quarterly reports to IRDAI as per prescribed format
